the Wood We Use
|
We carefully select the hardwoods we use. Wood can very from piece
to piece, in grain structure, hardness, density and appearance.
The variety that this creates is one of the most endearing traits
of items made with wood.
In addition, there are many varieties of wood, so many it is nearly
impossible to list them all. We are concerned with only three of
these types, and all of them demonstrate qualities that are unique
unto themselves.
Our most commonly used material is soft (or white) maple. It is one
of the most popular and widely used of today's lumber products.
However, the term "soft" is very misleading, for it is very much
a hardwood. It is about the same hardness and density as walnut,
birch or oak. The term soft is used only to differentiate this material
from rock maple, which is very hard and very heavy. In terms of
longevity, either one is about the same as long as it is properly
cared for.
The other wood we use extensively is Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) which
is both very dense and very heavy. However the outstanding coloring
and grain striations make this material one of the most beautiful
and enduring on the market today. If your taste is for a darker,
heavier wood, you certainly cannot go wrong to choose Jatoba.
Finally, in our chessboards, we use walnut to contrast with maple.
This is a marriage that is, virtually, made in heaven. The species
are of similar grain structure, hardness, density, weight and uniformity.
When you purchase one of our products, we hope you have it for many
years to come and that it might be passed from generation to generation.
How you care for your purchase will determine the longevity of the
products. We finish all of our products with an oil finish, leaving
the wood feeling warm and natural. We recommend that you care for
your purchase in much the same way, with oil. There are several
good lemon oil furniture polishes on the market, such as Old English.
Follow the directions and find a lifetime of enjoyment in your very
special wood product. |
